It's time to take stock after the party Conferences
Dear Sir
It's time to take stock after the party Conferences. In particular let's look at three key issues - the environment, the economy, and the "broken society".
On the environment Labour offers us more of the same. Their record is clear. They've spent 12 years not being that bothered and not doing very much. Remember John Prescott and his unified transport policy, which never actually happened? And now we have the Conservatives claiming to be environmental campaigners. And yet, when it came to David Cameron setting out his 10 pledges for "Sun" readers, he couldn't even be bothered to mention the environment. Only the LibDems have put fighting climate change at the heart of their policies.
And what about the economy? The Bush administration in America, the Labour Government and the Conservative opposition were all singing from the same hymn sheet - don't bother about regulating the speculators - let the markets rip. It was Vince Cable and the LibDems who sounded a warning. And now it's only the LibDems who are demanding that the big banks should be broken up so that they can never hold the taxpayers to ransom again. As for the Conservatives - their suicidal policy is to demand that the Government and the Bank of England stop intervening to save the economy from collapse. Unemployment is bad enough already - families in the West Midlands can thank their lucky stars that the Conservatives aren't in charge!
The Conservatives are right to point out that Labour is failing to create the society that we all long for - free from fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. The Conservatives talk about a "broken society". And yet they refuse to see that only a fairer society can heal social divisions. The Conservatives say we're all in the same boat, but what they want to do is to cut taxes for the very rich, just when the recession is hitting ordinary folk. Only the LibDems want to see a fair tax system, with everyone paying a fair share.
People who want to see real change for the better should consider voting for the LibDems.
