Letter about the Equality Trust and the need for a more equal society
Dear elector
Thank you so much for writing to me about the Equality Trust and the importance of making Britain a fairer and more equal society. I am familiar with the arguments in "The Spirit Level" from reviews and radio and academic discussion, although I have not yet had the time to read it. I am very much convinced by the arguments put forward for greater equality as a means towards improving society in a whole number of ways (although I actually think greater equality is desirable for its own sake as well). It is important to work towards this end, and I believe that my party, the Liberal Democrats, are the only major party currently committed to working for greater equality.
For example, my own election address will include my personal commitment to building a fairer Britain, starting with fairer taxes and fairer education. It will also include Nick Clegg's pledges to abolish income tax on the first £10,000 of earnings (taking many people on lower incomes out of tax altogether), spending £2.5 billion per year extra on education (to be distributed to schools according to the number of pupils entitled to school meals), scrapping university tuition fees, creating green jobs by investing in public transport, renewable energy and energy efficient affordable homes, and restoring the earnings link for pensions. The Liberal Democrats are also committed to a levy on banking profits, a "mansion tax", measures to close tax loopholes used by the super-rich, and a pilot scheme for phasing out the unfair council tax and replacing it with a local income tax.
Yours sincerely
Chris Bramall,
prospective Liberal Democrat candidate,
Stourbridge constituency
