Paul Lewis, Chairman of the Constables' Central Committee of the Police Federation for England and Wales has praised the Liberal Democrats for their commitment to put 3,000 extra police on the street.

Mr Lewis said in a letter to West Worcestershire Liberal Democrat candidate Richard Burt (former leader of the LibDem group on Dudley Council): "I was pleased to see that the LibDems' Safer Streets manifesto calls for a further 3,000 police officers on our streets - it is certainly a step in the right direction and the firmest central commitment yet from a mainstream political party."

Chris Bramall has supported the Liberal Democrats' campaign for more police officers locally (see press release of 5th February), and has supported the Police Federation's Real Policing Pledge.

Chris Bramall said: "When I was on Dudley Council I fought for and helped to achieve more community support officers for Stourbridge.

"Liberal Democrat policies would mean 156 new police officers for the West Midlands Police, who could be expected to make an additional 1,163 arrests and solve more than 1,193 extra crimes each year. Over 70 Liberal Democrat candidates in England and Wales have so far signed the Police Federation's 'Real Policing Pledge'. Bobbies on the beat are the bedrock of good policing."
