Statement in support of Mind

Thank you so much for contacting me about MIND's campaign for the General Election. I very much support your aims. I am only too well aware of the importance of excellent mental health services and social support for people affected. When I was young I suffered from depression for a number of years, and I got excellent support from the NHS and from my university.

Sadly, my late mother also suffered from depression for much of her life. That did not prevent her from living a full and active life, making an important contribution to society as a social worker and academic, as well as a homemaker and head of a large extended family. However I was really unhappy about the services available to her when she developed a form of dementia in her final years, even though she was a resident in a good care home, with kind nurses and carers.
