Dear Margot James MP, James Morris MP, Ian Austin MP, and Mike Wood MP
The decision taken by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to suspend parliament is the greatest attack on British democracy in living memory. It sets a dangerous precedent where the Prime Minister is now able to suspend the decision-making body to get his own way.
Supporters of Johnson's approach argue that this is normal for a new Prime Minister - but this is not true. This is the longest suspension of parliament 40 years.
Our democracy is based on scrutiny and debate, no Prime Minister is sovereign, and should not be able to act without the backing of a majority in the House of Commons.
This is not about Leave or Remain, nor is it about party politics. This is about defending democracy in the UK.
We the undersigned implore you to stand up to Boris Johnson, and, if it is the only way to stop this plan, support a vote of no confidence in the government.
