Why are the Liberal Democrats calling for the re-planning of bus services? Chris Bramall writes:
Stourbridge's new bus station is much to be welcomed. Surely now is the time for a complete re-think of local bus services. Too often it is it takes forever to get to your destination, and too often it is just impossible for people to use public transport to get to and from work.
Why is there no proper network of local express buses linking local town centres (Stourbridge, Dudley, Walsall, Woverhampton, etc)? Why do bus routes so often deviate round the houses on the way to their final destination? Why can't there be a sensible plan to separate out the routes serving villages and housing estates from the longer distance routes? Why is the system of routes so complicated that it is almost impossible to get accurate advice?
The system seems to have "just growed" over the years, with no overall planning. Surely it's time for a change!
If elected, June Collins and I are determined to press for everyone concerned - Centro, Network West Midlands, local councils, bus companies and user groups - to get together to develop a real plan for bus transport.
And while we're on the subject, let's keep the buses running regularly through Stourbridge Town Centre. It was a great idea, and should be extended indefinitely.
